In-Home Elderly Care Helps Seniors Maintain Heart-Healthy Lifestyles

Feb 8, 2018 by Erin Couchell

Help with meal preparation, medication reminders, and light exercise promotes senior heart health awareness

Raising awareness about heart health is important, particularly if we look at the statistics. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among American men and women across the board. February is American Heart Health Month, so we thought it would be good to examine the different aspects of heart health and more particularly how elderly care can help you stay healthy and independent for a long time.

Who Elderly Care Helps

If you are a senior and are losing some of your mobility and strength, elderly care can help you get back on track and living life on your own terms. Many people are embarrassed and ashamed to ask for help as they older. However, advanced age brings with it its own particular set of challenges and elderly care professionals provide compassionate, dignified day-to-day assistance.

Home Care & Heart Disease

So, what exactly are we talking about when it comes to heart disease? Heart disease is actually not one condition, but rather an umbrella term for a wide range of illnesses. It can encompass conditions like congenital artery disease, congestive heart failure, and arrhythmia.

In some cases, heart disease is simply hereditary. However, most often it is caused by unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. If you are worried about your diet and getting some exercise, or a doctor has recommended that you should, an elderly care professional can work with you to make that happen. Quality senior care is always about the particulars and making sure older adults are motivated to take on life's challenges.

Like we said, many conditions are considered heart disease. Although they may require vastly different treatment, all of them have very similar symptoms, including chest pain and discomfort, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, and weakness.

Whether or not you have been diagnosed with heart disease, there are many things you can do to either prevent it or manage it. An elderly care professional can help you do them. Going to the doctor regularly is a must, as is sticking to a healthy diet and exercise regimen. If you are a smoker, it would be wise to quit as soon as possible and limit your consumption of alcoholic beverages as well.

February is American Heart Health Month!

This February, make the decision to take care of yourself. Do your research about elderly care if you think you need it and take the next step on your journey towards heart health.
